The Choir Competition and Moments We Can Never Get Back

Today, I went to watch my second son’s choir competition.

When I was a student, I honestly thought choir competitions were a hassle. I didn’t enjoy the endless practices, and standing in front of a large audience made me uncomfortable.

But as an adult, sitting in the audience and watching these children, I found myself thinking:

“This moment will never come back.”

The laughter shared with friends during practice, the disagreements that made things awkward, and the nervousness before stepping onto the stage…

One day, all of those moments become sweet memories of youth.

As each song was performed, I realized I still remembered the words. Without thinking, I found myself singing along quietly.

And then it hit me.

The time I once thought was difficult and exhausting was actually precious—something I can never experience again.

In first year, choir practice felt like a chore. In second year, we tried a little harder because we didn’t want to lose to the older students. By third year, everyone came together with one goal: to do their best.

That’s the beauty of it.

Deep down, they know this is their last chance to sing together as this group.

Maybe that’s why the third-year students always sing with such passion and sincerity.

It was the same today.

As they sang, their posture, their eyes, and their hearts seemed united as one. I felt goosebumps, and before I knew it, tears were running down my face.

It was the same when my oldest son was in middle school.

And today, watching my second son, I found myself thinking the same thing again.

Right now, school feels ordinary to them. Choir practice probably feels tiring and annoying. They may even wish it would end sooner.

But someday, they will look back.

They will remember the smell of the classroom, the casual conversations with friends, and the songs they sang with all their hearts.

Perhaps that is what youth really is.

Something we only recognize as beautiful after it has passed.

As I listened to the children singing today, those were the thoughts that filled my mind.
