When my third son was still two years old, we visited my husband’s family home in Iwate.
We were given the largest room in the house—the Buddhist altar room. One evening, after dinner and baths, we were just relaxing together. That’s when my son, who was only two years and four months old at the time, suddenly started talking.
Son: “Someone is here.”
Me: “What? Where? I can’t see anyone.”
Son: “There! Over there!”
Me: “Hmm… I still can’t see anything. Who is it?”
Son: “He says he can’t see.”
Me: “What? I wonder if one of our ancestors came to visit us?”
My husband: “Actually… my grandpa was blind.”
Me: “Oh… really? Then maybe Grandpa came to see us.”
I often hear that small children or babies can see ghosts, but this was my first time actually experiencing something like that. I was truly surprised that such things can really happen, and at the same time, it made me feel warm inside.
If it’s possible to speak with those who have passed away like this, then maybe death isn’t the end after all. Perhaps there is a world beyond, and that thought gives me hope.

私たち家族は1番広い仏間のお部屋を使わせて頂くことになり、ある日の夜、夕飯もお風呂も済ませてのんびりしていた時のこと…
まだ当時2歳４ヶ月だった息子が突然、話し始めたのですが…
息子「ここに誰かいるよ」
私「え？どこ？見えないよ」
息子「ほら、あそこ！」
私「んー、まだ見えないよ。誰だろう？」
息子「おめめが見えないんだって」
私「え？誰かご先祖様が会いにきてくれてるのかしら？」
旦那「確かに、うちのじいちゃん、目見えなかったんだよね」
私「え…そうなんか…じゃあお爺ちゃんが見に来てくれたんだね」
よく、小さい子とか赤ちゃんとか幽霊が見えると言う話を聞くけれど、こういった場面にでくわしたのは初めてだったので本当にこんなことあるんだと、驚きと共にあたたかい気持ちになりました。
でも、こんな形で亡くなった方達と会話ができるなら、死んでも終わりじゃない、死後の世界もあるのかもしれないと、希望がもてますね。
