My Son’s Memories of Heaven and Our Family
Can We Still Trust People After Being Hurt Again and Again?
The last place we lived in the United States became one of the most painful chapters of our lives.
My oldest son experienced discrimination and bullying from his elementary school teacher. The stress became so overwhelming that he developed night terrors. (Night terrors are not the same as depression. They are a sleep disorder that can be triggered by extreme stress.)
I want to make this clear because my son is still a teenager. I don’t want anyone who may read this to make assumptions or start rumors about him. This is not meant to deny or minimize depression in any way. I simply want to protect my son from being misunderstood.
His symptoms became so severe that we decided the only way to help him was to leave that environment and return to Japan.
Sadly, our hardships did not end there.
After returning to Japan, I went through a divorce. Because I became a single mother, there were people who judged our family before they even knew us.
The truth was very different.
At the time, we were living with my parents, and my children grew up surrounded by the love of their grandfather, grandmother, and even their great-grandmother. My parents were quite strict when it came to discipline, but they loved my children deeply, and I’m sure my boys felt that love every day.
Still, simply because I was a single mother, some people assumed our home environment must be unhealthy. Sometimes they even said things like that directly to my children.
As a mother, those words broke my heart.
Of course, there were times when my children made mistakes like any other children do. But hearing someone say,
“Your family has a bad home environment.”
was incredibly painful.
Making friends was also very different for my two boys.
My oldest son made friends fairly quickly and was often invited out after school.
My younger son, however, almost always came home alone.
My own mother noticed it too. We were living with my parents then, and she would often say,
“He always comes home by himself. I wonder if he has any friends. Everyone else walks home with friends, but he’s always alone. It makes me so sad.”
At the time, he still struggled with Japanese, and I think he knew that the other children kept their distance from him.
Little by little, the cheerful, outgoing little boy I had always known began to disappear.
Eventually, both of my sons joined a local soccer club.
My oldest son had a close friend there, but my younger son was usually on his own.
I want to be clear that he was not bullied or intentionally excluded by the soccer team. There was simply a distance between him and the other children.
He enjoyed the training camps and genuinely loved playing soccer. I believe running around on the field helped him forget some of the sadness he carried inside.
Still, there were moments that hurt.
The other boys would excitedly say,
“Let’s all go to someone’s house after practice today!”
But my younger son was never invited.
One day, I finally asked one of the boys,
“Would it be okay if my son came too?”
The boy replied,
“It would probably be better if he didn’t. I don’t think he’d be able to follow everyone’s conversations.”
I don’t believe he meant to be cruel.
He was simply being honest.
My son’s Japanese wasn’t very strong yet, and he wasn’t interested in the same games the other boys loved. Instead, he liked the games he had grown up playing with children in America.
I didn’t argue.
In truth, I wasn’t even sure he would have enjoyed himself if he had gone.
And somehow…that made it hurt even more.
By the time he reached sixth grade, he had finally made a friend at school.
But that friendship soon turned into something painful.
The boy began hitting him—punching him in the head and stomach.
I immediately contacted the school, and thankfully his teacher took the situation seriously and responded quickly.
The problem was that it always happened when no one else was around, so there were no witnesses.
Fortunately, the other child admitted what he had done, and the teacher disciplined him. However, I never knew whether his parents were ever informed.
At that time, I chose to stay patient and continue watching over my son.
But there was one thing that worried me more than anything else.
By then…
his smile had almost completely disappeared.
